HOW IT IS ALL STARTING

Dandy the first goat

When I first thought about bringing some Castro Laboreiro Dogs into the U.S.A., it was in order to help to preserve the breed. A very old breed almost in extinction. They may exist about 500 Castro Laboreiro Dogs, in the whole world (please, check Portuguese Watch Dog Tab).

So I asked my dear cousin Dr. Pedro Barrento to assist me in purchasing and transporting two of these pups to the US from Portugal.

As those dogs are cattle watch dogs, they will need to have some livestock to watch over.  I will be adding some goats to the "family" for them to watch over and continue to encourage their guardian lifestyle.  As I am a vegetarian, our goats will be used to give us milk, not to be used for meat, but rather trained as pack goats, carrying the hikers loads.  Look forward to more information on Sunhearth Trails.  I am starting with a mommy goat and a couple of kids, which  will be trained as pack goats.  I hope to have my pack goats available for hiking trips in South Western PA in  2010.
